Happy New Year!

While I was at home with family during Thanksgiving break this year, I sat down with my notebook to write down my thoughts from the previous week, including a list of ideas I had been mulling over.

One of these ideas was particularly fascinating to me, but had some technically difficult aspects. Nothing I would be afraid to try to tackle at my full time job, but I have spent years solving a single technical problem at my job before. Not a very appealing side project....

An amazing thing happens, though, when you identify a problem worth solving. You may never actively look for a solution. But there is a part of your subconscious constantly scanning everything that happens to you, every memory, experience, fear, and desire, trying to form bridges between the islands of your understanding. And so it happened that in less than a month, without looking for it, I found the solution to my problem. I decided it was time to start working. Success now is dependent on two things: luck and good process.

It's getting late. Time to go out and celebrate the end of 2007. I think 2008 will be an exciting year.
